Conquering Your º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ Personal Statement

Aug 27, 2025

At Florida Southern, we know that writing a college essay can feel daunting. But here’s some good news: your personal statement is simply a chance for us to get to know you. Think of it as your introduction to the º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ community — a way to share your story, your values, and the experiences that shaped who you are.

We’ll walk you through our three personal statement prompts, providing tips for choosing the one that feels right for you.

Prompt 1: Pick a quote that describes a lot about you and explain why you connect with it.

  • Be Personal: Choose a quote that genuinely reflects you (not just something that sounds impressive).
  •  Tell a Story: Share a real-life example of how this quote has shown up in your life.
  •  Reflect: Go beyond description and explain how this quote has influenced your choices, perspective, or goals.

Example idea: If your quote is about perseverance, connect it to a time you overcame a challenge and what you learned from it.

Prompt 2: A range of interests and perspectives adds much to a college community. Given your background, what experiences do you bring to Florida Southern that will add to the college environment?

  • Highlight What Makes You Different: Consider what makes your background, culture, or academic or life experiences distinctive.
  •  Show Impact: Explain how your perspective will add value to campus life — in the classroom, in clubs, or in the community.
  •  Be Specific: Instead of general statements ("I like meeting people"), share concrete examples of how you've built community in the past.

Example idea: Maybe you grew up bilingual and have helped others navigate language barriers. Describe that experience and how you'll bring what you learned to º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ.

Prompt 3: Describe an experience that has profoundly affected you. How has this experience helped to define your decision to further your education at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ?

  • Share a Story: Think of a meaningful experience — big or small — that shaped your outlook.
  •  Show Growth: Reflect on how this moment influenced your goals or values.
  •  Connect to º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ: Tie it back to why º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ is the right place for your next chapter.

Example idea: If volunteering changed your career goals, explain how º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ's engaged learning and service opportunities will help you build on that passion.
